What is beauty? What does this word, concept really mean? Is it just simply the pleasure that ones derives from seeing, hearing , experiencing a thing outside, inside one's self? Beauty is a descriptive ascribed to women, in western society we usually don't describe men as being beautiful. Is beauty a state of being, a gender specified condition, or state? In Rogers II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition by the Editors of the American Heritage Dictionary states that it is a "special feature that confers superiority. Is beauty a thing, a tangible, intangible that confers a special quality?. Wordnet 1.7.1 by Princeton University states beauty, as a plural, are "qualities that give pleasure to the senses."
Does our sense of what is beautiful change? During out life time, during the ages? Are there enduring qualities that we as a western culture define as beautiful? Is our sense of beauty defined by our time, the culture, and context in which we live?
Can something be physically ugly and still be beautiful?
How do these questions apply to art? Film? Design? Art and Folk Arts from different cultural orientations?
More to come.
